HARDSCAPING & OUTDOOR LIVING — BAKERSFIELD
Hardscaping & Outdoor Living in Bakersfield
Patios, walls and outdoor rooms built on a properly excavated, compacted, drained base — the part nobody sees is the reason the surface stays flat.
This is the built structure of the yard: paver and stone patios, walkways, driveways, retaining and seat walls, steps, fire features and outdoor kitchens. Most hardscape that fails did not fail at the surface — it failed in the base, the compaction or the drainage. That is where the work goes.
What This Covers
The Work Inside Hardscaping & Outdoor Living
- Paver, flagstone and porcelain-paver patios, plus poured and broom-finished concrete flatwork
- Walkways, garden paths, side-yard runs and driveway aprons
- Segmental block, boulder and poured retaining walls, sized and reinforced to the height they hold back
- Seat walls, planter walls and low garden walls that define a space without closing it in
- Steps and grade transitions between the house, the yard and the street
- Fire pits and gas or wood fireplaces, and BBQ islands and outdoor kitchens with the gas and electrical run by licensed subs
- Pergolas and shade structures, engineered and permitted where the size requires it
- The base nobody sees — excavation to subgrade, road base compacted in lifts, edge restraint, bedding layer, polymeric joint sand
- Wall drainage — free-draining gravel, perforated pipe and weep holes so water never builds pressure behind the wall
How the Job Goes
First Call to Finished Walk-Through
-
Walkthrough and use
We look at how you want to use the space — dining, fire, cooking, a path from A to B — where the sun and shade fall through the day, and how the area drains now. That drives layout more than style does.
-
Layout and materials
We stake or paint the footprint on the ground so you can walk it, set finished elevations, and pick materials — paver line and colour, wall block, stone. Seeing it full size on site catches problems a drawing hides.
-
Written proposal
Line items by element — patio, wall, steps, fire feature, gas, electrical, lighting — with the base build-up spelled out, so a scope change is a line, not a renegotiation.
-
Utility locate
DigAlert (811) marks the public utilities. We hand-check for private lines — irrigation mainline, low-voltage lighting, a gas stub to an old grill — before the excavator starts.
-
Excavate to subgrade
A patio is typically dug seven to ten inches below finished grade; a driveable surface goes deeper. Spoil is hauled off. Soft or wet subgrade gets over-excavated and bridged with geotextile and extra rock.
-
Base rock, compacted in lifts
Class II road base goes in a few inches at a time and each lift is plate- or roller-compacted to a firm, unyielding surface. Skipping lifts and compacting one thick layer is the single most common cause of a wavy paver field two years on.
-
Edge restraint and bedding
A rigid edge is spiked around the perimeter so the field cannot creep. A screeded bedding layer over the compacted base sets the pavers at a consistent height.
-
Lay the field, cut the borders
Pavers are laid in pattern off a string line, borders and curves cut to fit, and the field checked for line and plane as it goes. Patios are pitched a minimum of one percent to daylight — never toward the house.
-
Walls, course by course
A retaining wall starts on a compacted leveling pad or a footing. The first course is set dead level because every course above copies it. Drainage gravel and perforated pipe go in behind the wall as it rises, tied to an outlet, with weep holes at the base.
-
Compact, sand and finish
The paver field is compacted with a plate over a protective mat, polymeric sand is swept into the joints and set with a fine mist, caps are adhered to walls, and the site is cleaned. Sealer goes on only if it is in the scope and the pavers are dry and cured.
Permits and inspections: The City of Bakersfield requires a building permit for a retaining wall over four feet measured from the bottom of the footing to the top, or lower if it carries a surcharge such as a slope or a driveway above it. Gas and electrical runs to an outdoor kitchen are permitted and inspected separately, done by licensed subcontractors. Most patios, paths and low garden walls are not permitted work.
What Decides the Price
Where Your Estimate Lands in the Range
We don't publish a flat price, because two hardscaping & outdoor living projects on the same Bakersfield street can differ by a factor of three depending on what's below.
Area, shape and cuts
A simple rectangle lays fast. Curves, multiple levels, inlays and lots of border cuts add labour and paver waste, and that shows up per square foot.
Material
Standard concrete pavers sit at the low end. Tumbled and textured lines, large-format porcelain pavers, and natural stone each step the number up in material cost and in the labour to set them well.
Excavation and haul-off
How deep the dig goes, how much spoil leaves the site, and whether a machine can reach the work or it is wheelbarrows through a narrow gate all move the base cost.
Wall height and type
A two-foot garden wall is a different animal from a five-foot engineered retaining wall with a footing, rebar, drainage and an engineer's stamp. Height, length and what the wall holds back set the price.
Add-ons and utilities
A fire pit, a full outdoor kitchen, gas lines, electrical circuits and low-voltage lighting are each their own scope with their own materials, subs and inspections.
Subgrade conditions
Firm, dry subgrade is ideal. Soft, wet or heavily organic ground needs over-excavation, geotextile and additional base rock before the real build starts.

Signs You Need This
If Any of This Sounds Familiar
- Concrete that has settled or cracked into trip edges, or a slab that rocks underfoot
- A patio that ponds after rain or drains back toward the house
- Pavers that have rutted, dipped or gone wavy — a base failure, not a surface one
- A slope you cannot use, or one that is eroding toward the house or the patio
- No real path, so foot traffic has worn a dirt line across the lawn
- Wanting an outdoor room — a place to eat, sit by a fire, or cook — that the house opens straight onto
- A retaining wall that is leaning, bulging or weeping mud at the base
The Bakersfield Angle
What This City Does to Hardscaping & Outdoor Living
Bakersfield's expansive clay — local crews call it adobe — shrinks when it dries and swells when it wets. That movement is what tips walls and lifts slabs, so base compaction and keeping moisture stable under the work matter more here than in sandy ground.
Summer surface temperatures are real. Dark pavers and plain grey concrete get uncomfortable underfoot in July; lighter colours, and a pergola or sail over the seating area, make the space usable in the months you actually want it.
Rain is rare but arrives in bursts. Every hard surface has to pitch to daylight, and every retaining wall needs gravel, pipe and weep holes behind it, because the one storm a year is when an underdrained wall lets go.
The region is seismically active. Engineered walls get footings and reinforcement sized by an engineer to the height and surcharge, not to a rule of thumb.
Wind-driven grit is hard on cheap sealers and joint sand. We use polymeric sand in the joints and, where a sealer is specified, a product rated for the abrasion and the UV.
Questions Homeowners Ask
Before You Call, or Right After
Pavers or stamped concrete?
Pavers flex with ground movement and a damaged section can be lifted and reset; stamped concrete is one rigid slab that cracks where the ground moves and is hard to repair invisibly. In Bakersfield's clay we usually steer clients toward pavers for anything that has to stay flat and level for years.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?
Over four feet from the bottom of the footing to the top, yes — and lower if the wall carries a surcharge like a slope or driveway above it. We handle the permit and the engineering. Low garden and seat walls are not permitted work.
How long does a paver patio take?
A straightforward few-hundred-square-foot patio is usually four to seven working days: excavation and base, then laying, then compaction and joint sand. Walls, multiple levels, a fire feature or utilities extend that.
Will the pavers sink or shift over time?
Not if the base is right. The failure mode is almost always a base that was not compacted in lifts or an edge restraint that was skipped. We compact each lift and spike a rigid edge around the whole field.
Can you match the stone on my house or existing wall?
Usually. We bring samples to the site to compare in your light, and if an exact match is not made any more we will get as close as the current product lines allow and show you before ordering.
